Jersey Celebrates 40 Years of Sending Volunteers Overseas |

Help an African Schoolchild is proud to be one of the organisations which has sent volunteers to Africa for 16 of those years - on building projects and on short term work placements through ZamGap. We also went with Jersey Overseas Aid projects 20 years ago to Tanzania and Zambia.
This celebration happened last weekend 28th & 29th August and it was great to catch up people we hadnt seen in years! Eating Round The World was fanatastic. Big thanks you to Jean le Maistre for organising the event

Great North Coast Charity Challenge 12 September '10

Tetekela Centre handed over to the Sisters of the Child Jesus
The Trustees of the charity met at the end of March in 2008 and decided that Tetekela Centre was ready to be handed over to a local organisation. The centre was costing us approximately £15,000 per annum to run – the majority going on staff wages and approx £10,000 on running costs. We continue to support the centre by providing the money for the monthly food budget. We will also encourage and finance some money generating projects before we withdraw totally in the future.
We are very proud that we have been able to fund the centre for the last eight years. The decision of the Trustees was that we would offer the centre to the Sister of the Child Jesus with an agreement that we would provide help with the running costs.
We had a meeting with the sisters and it was fortuitous that they where looking for a new project to get involved with and the centre was an ideal project for them to undertake.
Since last April the sisters have been working with our staff and seeing how the centre is run and how the ethos of the centre is maintained. Vanessa, who was fundamental to the development of the centre, has had much consultation with the nuns and they seem to want to do their best for the centre’s children.
There were a number of problems initially with the title deeds but these have now been resolved and the centre has been handed over to the Sisters. We are still liaising with them on many issues but things seem to be going well.
The Sisters of the Child Jesus have identified 20 children from the centre who they think can be integrated into normal school and we will fund these children.
So as of September 2008 the centre will be run by the sisters and they have kept on a few staff members whose wages they will be responsible for.
The money saved by handing over the centre to the Sisters of the Child Jesus will now be used to fund other projects.
The handing over of the centre to the Sisters was a difficult decision emotionally for the Trustees but we feel that in the long run that it is important for local organisations to be responsible for projects.

 KASENGA SCHOOL PROJECT & TETEKELA DAY CARE CENTRE
 December 2009
We have just returned from Kasama, Zambia and are very pleased to report the successful completion of another classroom to the school we built a few years ago.
The project was free of any hassle and the quality of work is great. We were able to purchase desks for the new classroom and one desk was donated by 2 young girls from England who had fund raised to pay for it along with meals for children at the centre.

We paid an emotional visit to Tetekela Day Care Centre - there is never a shortage of children who want to attend. Footballs and netballs were very well received by the children! The Sisters have managed to develop the centre by building accommodation and a wall fence for security. When we handed over the centre to the Sisters of Child Jesus we commited to continue to send over kwa 4,000,000 (approx £580) per month for the monthly food budget for the children at the centre and we will continue to fund raise for this. The sisters also asked us to consider funding any smaller projects i.e. a goat herd project on the airport road and a new water pump for the centre. We will decide which project to support when funds allow.
We continue to pay the school fees for a number of children from Tetekela Centre.
Thanks to donations from local businesses' dress down days, such as Jersey Trust and Beaumont Home Centre, we are able to do extra little projects around the area and at the centre.
