About Hast

The Aim of the charity is:
To improve the living conditions, the educational standards and facilities in a number of Zambian and Tanzanian communities

Life skills and vocational training

Earning a living is crucial, especially for teenagers in child-headed households looking after siblings at home. The charity supports vocational training for the street and OVS at our centre.

What we do

Our main project is helping and assisting street children and orphans in the northern town of Kasama in Northern Zambia.

Everest Base Camp Trek Christmas 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Sunny days but freezing cold nights accompanied the group of trekkers who reached Everest Base Camp to raise funds for Help an African Schoolchild.

everest_basecamp

Some of the group were hit by illness in Kathmandu but the remaining group of nine who set off from Lukla successfully reached their goal. They all agreed it was tough and cold but despite hardships on the way they don't have any regrets and agree it was an experience and a Christmas they'll never forget.
The trek took 11 days over tough terrain and at altitudes of over 17,500ft - 2 of the group went on to Kala Patthar at 18,192ft.
This is no mean feat and the group, average age 53 years, are to be congratulated on their efforts. So far the money raised for the locally based charity has reached over £6,500 with more to come.

The organisers, Vanessa Nash & Kevin Daly, are very grateful to the group for their continued support of the charity - most of them have done Kilimanjaro with Help an African Schoolchild.

The next trek to Everest base Camp will be in November 2012

Join us!... together we can make a diffrence... We have been taking groups to climb Kilimanjaro since 1999, sometimes more than 1 group per year.  Our summit success statistics are better than the park’s figures!!!

Our aim is to get everyone to climb Kilimanjaro safely but at least reach Gilman’s Point (The rim of the crater) which is a fantastic achievement in itself.

Visit to Zambia February 2011 PDF Print E-mail

We have just returned from a brief but productive visit to Kasama in Zambia where we were able to check up on projects.

Kasenga School and Chileshe Chepela Wasonga Special School

We followed the initial 20 desks which went from Kasama town to Kasenga Bush School along the treacherous dirt roads.rains had been heavy and the roads were atrocious but the lorry driver took things steadily and the desks arrived safely after nearly 2 hours! Twenty more desks are being made by the same carpenter in town to be delivered to the same school.

Whilst there we handed over footballs and netballs for the pupils – these were very popular. Plus dusters and chalk for the teachers (not so popular!)

Mutale took some books and balls to Wasonga which were welcomed by the Head and staff.
He also checked on our bursary students to make sure everything was OK.

Tetekela Day Care Centre

The centre has a new in charge – Sister Charity. She is young, lively and has a great rapport with the children – not afraid to join in with the dancing and singing! We think she will be great – as usual there were the tears (from me) as the children sang and danced for us – always a moving experience to go to the centre which we started 11 years ago. The Sisters are doing very well and are very pro-active.

Unfortunately, there are still young boys living on the streets of Kasama who will not go to the centre or any institution so we are considering building a very, very basic structure just to give some shelter at night – away from the nasty street life and dangers.

Last years Kilimanjaro Trekkers donated money for a new pump for the centre – this is working well and much appreciated at the centre where water is so needed. The play park equipment is nearing completion and the children were excited to hear this news – although Sister Charity admitted the staff may have a go as well!

We have been very grateful to the educational establishments here in Jersey and on mainland who have donated to us over the past year – hopefully you will agree your money was well spent! Sincere thanks to all donors.
