Tetekela Centre handed over to the Sisters of the Child Jesus

The Trustees of the charity met at the end of March in 2008 and decided that Tetekela Centre was ready to be handed over to a local organisation. The centre was costing us approximately £15,000 per annum to run – the majority going on staff wages and approx £10,000 on running costs.

We are very proud that we have been able to fund the centre for the last eight years. The decision of the Trustees was that we would offer the centre to the Sister of the Child Jesus with an agreement that we would provide help with the running costs.

We had a meeting with the sisters and it was fortuitous that they where looking for a new project to get involved with and the centre was an ideal project for them to undertake.

Since April the sisters have been working with our staff and seeing how the centre is run and how the ethos of the centre is maintained. Vanessa, who was fundamental to the development of the centre, has had much consultation with the nuns and they seem to want to do their best for the centre’s children.

There were a number of problems initially with the title deeds but these have now been resolved and the centre has been handed over to the Sisters. We are still liaising with them on many issues but things seem to be going well.

The Sisters of the Child Jesus have identified 20 children from the centre who they think can be integrated into normal school and we will fund these children.

We have now handed over the centre to the sisters and they have kept on a few staff members whose wages they will be responsible for.

We have now moved our base from the centre and our charity office is located in one of our shops. Annette Chisanga is still our charity co-ordinator and will operate from the new office. We have kept on two gardeners and a night watchman.

The money saved by handing over the centre to the Sisters of the Child Jesus will now be used to fund other projects.

The handing over of the centre to the Sisters was a difficult decision emotionally for the Trustees but we feel that in the long run that it is important for local organisations to be responsible for projects.

The charity ‘Help an African Schoolchild Trust’ is non denominational and was officially formed in 1994 and presently works in Tanzania and Zambia.

The Aim of the charity is:
To improve the living conditions, the educational standards
and facilities in a number of Zambian and Tanzanian communities

Objectives:
To carry out small community projects e.g. to provide wells for fresh drinking water or feeding programs for malnourished children.

To raise funds for individual schools to buy essential equipment and materials, with particular emphasis on assisting special needs schools.

To assist financially and practically in minor and major building projects.

To assist women’s groups in their development.

How do we achieve this aim and these objectives?
Through the generosity of Overseas Aid, local companies, schools, Trusts and individuals.

The charity obtains money through fund raising both locally and nationally. Local fund raising has been extremely successful. We have raised over £74,000 from our Abseil for Africa event and over £86,000 from our Mount Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge, plus numerous amounts from other small fund raising events.

We have had much financial support from both the States of Jersey and the States of Guernsey Overseas Aid committees.

The support from local schools and companies has been amazing and it shows that schoolchildren and the local community really do have a concern for others.
Through child sponsorship, we presently have over 150 children in Zambia and 50 in Tanzania who are at both primary and secondary school who are being sponsored by the generosity of Channel Islanders.
